The
Journey

The Manx started with one Californian engineer, artist, boat builder, surfer and all-round nice guy, Bruce F. Meyers. In 1964, Bruce created the original, ‘Old Red’. Since then, Meyers Manx have been a staple on beaches and dunes all over the world, spreading California sunshine. As Manx 2.0 takes us into the next generation, we’ve made sure to take the soul of ‘Old Red’ along with us.

Bruce F. Meyers creates the first Manx, ‘Old Red’, soon to become the prototype for a series of car kits that could be applied to the slightly shortened chassis of Volkswagen Beetles.

Bruce Meyers (in his Manx) beats the motorcycle record for the Baja 1000. A 950mile race of rocks, sand, dry lake beds, cattle crossings and mountain passes that ‘Old Red’, Meyers and Ted Mangels completed more than five hours faster than the previous record.

Less than a week after setting the Baja speed record, the Meyers Manx is featured on the April 1967 cover of Car and Driver, receiving around 350 orders, almost overnight.

DISCO HAPPENED…
AND KEPT HAPPENING

We’re not saying we started disco… but we’ve been putting sparkly metal flake paint on things since the mid sixties. In fact, Bruce’s Manx sparked a cultural movement, with the shockwaves still being felt today. Taking the opportunity to experiment (and simultaneously fight off copy cats), Bruce released the unique Meyers Manx Mk II and the sportier Manx SR (street roadster), along with the stripped out off-road Meyers Tow’d (to be towed to the beach) and the Meyers Tow’dster, a hybrid of the two. Around this time he also played with the Meyers Resorter or Turista, better suited to the bursting resort scene than race trails.

2000s

Fast forward to the next century and Bruce, well into his 70s and still unable to quench his thirst for innovation, continues designing. He starts to experiment with sketches that he had been sitting on since the seventies. Including the Manxter 2+2 and Manxter DualSport, showing modernizations of the original design, but scaled up and beefed out.

In 2009 Meyers is drawn back to the shape of the shorter wheelbase, redeveloping and updating the design for the modern era resulting in the Kick-Out Manx Traditional and the Kick-Out Manx S.S., with headlights flared into the hood and twin roll hoops.

Long term friend of Bruce and legendary designer Freeman Thomas sat down with entrepreneur and lifelong Manx fanatic Phillip Sarofim and the two distilled history.

Taking inspiration from 60 years of Manx history, as well as the history of the entire off-road racing industry that Bruce put in motion, the Meyers Manx 2.0 Electric is unveiled. Stripping back the experimental designs to the core of Bruce’s original vision. An iconic embodiment of California spirit is reborn for the modern age.
